NATIONAL LEAGUE OF AMERICAN PEN WOMEN

The National League of American Pen Women (N.L.A.P.W.) is an organization founded in Washington D.C. in 1897 by a group of eminent journalists who saw the need for an organization which would include women of the press in its membership.

By the end of its first year, the N.L.A.P.W. was incorporated with a membership made up of professional women writers, composers and artists, the three membership categories which still make up the League a century after its inception. Present membership includes about 5000 members in 200 branches across the United States.

The Pen Arts Building, which is listed in the National Historical Register, is a unique, turreted twenty-room Victorian mansion located just a few blocks from the White House in Washington D.C. Its most famous resident was Robert Todd Lincoln (President Abraham Lincoln's son), former Secretary of War and Minister in Great Britain. League member Vinnie Ream created the famous sculpture of Abraham Lincoln, "Pensive Lincoln," which stands in the Capitol Rotunda.

The national organization publishes a monthly magazine, The Pen Woman, and a biennial membership roster that facilitates networking. National and regional conferences are held and scholarships and grants-in-aid for members and non-members are sponsored by the League to foster excellence in the three artistic divisions: art, writing and musical composition.

HISTORY OF HONOLULU BRANCH

Though not quite as venerable as its national organization, the Honolulu Branch of N.L.A.P.W. celebrated its 75th birthday in 2000, making it the oldest continuously-operating professional artists' organization in Hawaii. Honolulu Branch was founded in 1924 and received Charter #27 from the parent body on May 25, 1925.

The Honolulu Branch was first called the Aloha Branch because one of its purposes was to extend hospitality to visiting artists, musicians and writers. At that time, visitors to the islands were few, and the arrival of a celebrity was an important event.

In a brief history of the Honolulu Branch, the late Gwenfread Allen wrote:

"Over the years, several hundred women have belonged to the branch for varying periods of time. Among the service wives were Mrs. George S. Patton, Jr., wife of the famed World War II general, and Mrs. James F. Collins, wife of the commander-in-chief of the U.S. army, Pacific.

"For a time before World War II, the president of the branch was ex-officio member of the board of Friends of the Library. For more than a score of years, the art members held an annual show at the main building of the Library of Hawaii. Also, for years until pressure of space prevented continuance of the project, a Pen Women's shelf, containing works by League members, was maintained at the library.

"Celebrity breakfasts given by the branch were an annual event on Honolulu's social calendar for a number of years. For more than a decade, League members gave monthly radio broadcasts. The League has sponsored creative writing contests for high school students. In 1973, the Honolulu Branch helped sponsor an art scholarship contest conducted by the Northwest Region of the National League.

"Branch members from the beginning have had an outstanding record of professional achievement in their chosen fields. They have created art that has won national recognition; their books, plays and magazine articles have received wide circulation, and their music has been given great acclaim. Maintaining the splendid records set by their predecessors, members today are continuing work in art, letters, and music, using their creative abilities for the benefit and enjoyment of others."

The list of notable Honolulu Pen Women from throughout the seven decades of the group's existence is too large to record here, but the branch has thrived and it continues to draw in professional artists at all stages of their careers. Veterans in their field share their creative and marketing knowledge with newer members, problems are solved and camaraderie established which has led to many life-long friendships. Members list the opportunities for professional networking and caring support as primary reasons for maintaining their membership in the Honolulu Branch.
